After sugar, onions and edible oil, lemon prices have now surged sharply in Ahmedabad, with retail rates doubling in just a fortnight. Lemons that were selling for around ₹120 per kg two weeks ago are now priced at ₹240–260 per kg.The steep rise has surprised consumers, as lemon prices generally increase during summer. This time, however, prices have climbed sharply during the monsoon.
Wholesale Prices Also Surge
The wholesale price of lemons at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Marketing Yard has increased significantly. On August 22, lemons were priced at ₹10–55 per kg. The rate has now risen to ₹80–160 per kg.At the same time, lemon arrivals at the yard have fallen. Arrivals currently stand at 6,710 quintals, compared with 10,608 quintals during the corresponding period last year—a decline of 3,898 quintals.Traders said the reduced supply has been a major factor behind the sharp rise in prices.
Supply Hit by Weather Conditions
Lemons supplied to Ahmedabad come from Andhra Pradesh and other parts of South India, as well as Mehsana, Bhavnagar and Palitana. At present, however, supplies are mainly coming from Rajasthan, while arrivals from several other regions have stopped.Agricultural and market experts said farmers in several lemon-growing areas have harvested only enough produce to meet local demand. Continuous heat has also caused lemons to turn yellow and fall from trees, further reducing supply.At the same time, prolonged rains accompanied by summer-like weather have increased demand for lemons, which are widely used with vegetables, pulses and other food items.
Prices Unlikely to Fall Before Navratri
Traders do not expect lemon prices to ease significantly before Navratri. Fresh supplies from South India are expected to begin around Dussehra, which could help bring prices under control.The new crop from Gujarat generally reaches the market around February and March. Until fresh supplies increase, consumers are likely to continue paying higher prices for lemons.
