The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to provide its shavvahini (dead body transport) service free of charge within the city’s civic limits.
The service, operated by the AMC’s Fire and Emergency Services Department, is used to transport deceased persons from hospitals to their homes or from homes to cremation grounds. Until now, citizens had to pay a fee for using the service as per rates approved by the civic body.
At the Standing Committee meeting held on Thursday, AMC officials and office-bearers approved a proposal to waive the charges for the shavvahini service within AMC limits.
With the decision, Ahmedabad residents will no longer have to pay for transporting a deceased family member from a hospital to their home or from their home to a crematorium.
The AMC said the move is intended to support families during a difficult time and reduce the financial burden of transporting the deceased.
