Recurring road accidents in Vadodara have once again exposed the failure to curb traffic violations and reckless driving. Wrong-side driving, overspeeding and blatant disregard for traffic rules have become routine on city roads, leading to growing public anger over what many describe as reactive rather than preventive action by authorities.
The latest incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when a student riding a two-wheeler was killed after being hit by an ST bus on the Fateganj Bridge. The tragedy has reignited concerns over road safety, especially since another young man lost his life on the same bridge about two-and-a-half months ago after his motorcycle skidded. Residents say repeated accidents have failed to prompt lasting safety measures.
Following a series of mishaps, officials from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation and the city police jointly inspected the Fateganj Bridge on July 22. They directed the installation of several safety measures, including traffic indicator boards, thermoplastic rumble strips, reflective hazard markers on curves, and cat’s eyes to improve visibility and encourage motorists to maintain safe speeds.
According to the administration, indicator boards and reflective hazard markers have been installed. However, the installation of rumble strips and cat’s eyes remains incomplete due to the monsoon, with officials assuring that the work will be finished soon.
The student’s death has intensified public criticism, with many questioning whether the accident could have been prevented had the safety upgrades been completed on time.
With accidents increasing on several city bridges, citizens are now demanding more than awareness campaigns and appeals. They are calling for strict enforcement of traffic rules, tough action against wrong-side driving and speeding, and the timely completion of road safety infrastructure to prevent further loss of life.
