The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at Ahmedabad’s J.G. University, alleging that hundreds of students were denied admission to the next semester despite clearing their supplementary examinations. While ABVP claimed the issue had affected around 500 students, the university administration said the matter was being misunderstood and that promotions were granted as per academic rules.
ABVP raises students’ concerns
ABVP leaders submitted a memorandum to the university administration demanding immediate action in the interest of students. The organisation alleged that:
- Around 500 students who passed the supplementary examination were not granted admission to the next semester.
- Since students have already missed over a month of classes, they should be admitted immediately and given an opportunity to complete the missed coursework.
- The Vice-Chancellor was unavailable despite the university functioning from 7.30 am, prompting criticism that the administration was ignoring students’ concerns while focusing on publicity.
University explains promotion rules
Responding to the allegations, J.G. University Registrar clarified that promotions had been granted strictly according to university regulations.
The Registrar said:
- Students with four or fewer ATKTs (backlogs) were promoted to the next semester and allowed to attend classes.
- The university advanced the supplementary examinations from the usual November-December schedule to June to prevent students from losing an academic year.
- Contrary to ABVP’s claim of 500 affected students, only around 125 students with five or more ATKTs could not be promoted under the rules.
- Students who are not promoted due to academic regulations are not charged fees for the next semester.
The Registrar assured that all students eligible under university rules would be accommodated and their academic schedule would be adjusted to ensure their studies continue without unnecessary delay.
