Amid rising concern over road accidents involving underage riders, the State School Management Federation Trust has urged schools across Gujarat to ensure that students bringing two-wheelers to campus have a valid driving licence.
In a circular issued to grant-in-aid and self-financed schools, the federation advised schools to prohibit students below the legal driving age from riding two-wheelers to school. In exceptional cases, schools should seek a written request from parents and verify the student’s licence and other relevant documents.
Federation president Bhaskar Patel said several accidents involving underage riders have highlighted the need for educational institutions to take preventive measures. He stressed that schools have a responsibility to ensure students’ safety and discipline, in addition to providing education.
The federation has also asked schools to carry out strict checks at entry gates and discourage students from illegally commuting on two-wheelers.
The appeal comes as police have intensified enforcement drives in Ahmedabad and other cities, frequently catching school students riding without valid licences or protective gear.
