Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Gujarat have resumed fitness certification for private cars and two-wheelers after a temporary suspension that left more than 50,000 applications pending.
The services restarted from July 13 and will continue at RTOs until Automated Testing Stations (ATS) are fully established across the state.
Fitness inspections were suspended in phases from May 8 after the Central Government introduced new rules requiring automated fitness testing and revised fitness fees. Since the Gujarat government had not yet implemented the new system, RTOs stopped conducting tests to avoid legal and audit-related issues.
The suspension caused a large backlog and created difficulties for vehicle owners, many of whom could not renew their insurance without a valid fitness certificate.
With the services now resumed, vehicle owners will have to pay the revised fees. The fitness test fee for private two-wheelers has increased from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500, while the fee for private cars has risen from Rs 5,200 to Rs 13,500.
Under the rules, private vehicles must undergo their first fitness test 15 years after registration, followed by a test every five years.
According to a circular issued by the Transport Commissioner’s office, the Rs 50 per day late fee will not apply to vehicles appearing for their first fitness test. However, the penalty will be charged for delayed renewal of subsequent fitness certificates.
RTOs, including Subhash Bridge, Vastral, Bavla and Gandhinagar, have made special arrangements to clear the backlog of pending applications.
Fitness testing for commercial vehicles will continue through Automated Testing Stations (ATS) as per the existing system.
