Construction of the long-delayed Vadaj Junction flyover has entered a crucial phase with the launch of girders, marking significant progress in one of Ahmedabad’s key infrastructure projects. The project, which is running nearly eight months behind schedule, is now expected to be completed by November 2026.
The flyover has been under construction to ease chronic traffic congestion at Vadaj Junction, a major intersection in the city’s western corridor. With the monsoon underway, civic authorities have expedited work to prevent further delays.
As part of the current phase, girders are being launched for the 41-metre span between Piers G-1 and G-3 on the stretch connecting Vadaj Junction to Gandhi Ashram. The operation commenced on Friday night and is scheduled to conclude by the night of July 5.
Night-time road closure
To minimise disruption to traffic, the girder launching work is being carried out only during night hours. Authorities have announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions during the operation and have advised commuters to plan their travel accordingly.
Contractor penalised for delay
The flyover was originally slated for completion by April 30, 2026, but construction delays forced the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to extend the deadline to November 2026.
The AMC has imposed a penalty of over ₹90 lakh on the contractor for failing to meet the original completion schedule.
Officials attributed the delay to the heavy volume of traffic passing through the busy Vadaj Junction, where round-the-clock vehicle movement has posed significant challenges to construction activities.
Once completed, the flyover is expected to substantially ease congestion on the corridor, benefiting nearly 1.5 lakh vehicles, around 100 GSRTC buses and 50 AMTS buses that use the route every day.
