More than a month after the new academic session began, Gujarat is yet to start the recruitment process for contractual teachers, known as gyan sahayaks, for Classes IX to XII, raising concerns over a shortage of teachers in schools.
Sources said the Commissioner of Schools has not yet started collecting data on vacant teaching posts across districts, delaying the recruitment process.
Typically, the education department gathers vacancy details before the academic year begins and issues recruitment notifications based on the number of vacant posts, particularly in schools facing a shortage of permanent teachers.
Officials said recruitment cannot begin until the vacancy data is compiled. Even if the process starts in the coming days, it is expected to take more than a month to complete, meaning many schools will continue to function without adequate teaching staff.
The delay is likely to affect students in secondary and higher secondary classes, with many expected to appear for their first examinations without sufficient classroom instruction.
