Two persons were injured after a speeding car plunged into a trench near the under-construction canal close to Chandrabhaga Bridge and the Gandhi Ashram redevelopment area in Ahmedabad during the early hours of Friday.
The accident occurred along the Chandrabhaga canal stretch, where renovation and repair work is currently underway as part of the Gandhi Ashram redevelopment project. The sight of the damaged vehicle inside the trench attracted a large number of onlookers, with many residents questioning how the car managed to enter an area that was reportedly barricaded from all sides.
The impact of the crash was severe, causing the vehicle’s airbags to deploy. Locals initially suspected that two people had been travelling in the car when the accident occurred.
According to police, the incident took place at around 2.30 am when a car was travelling from the Ranip D-Mart side towards Chandrabhaga Bridge via the newly developed canal road. The vehicle was being driven by 39-year-old Vishalbhai Manojbhai Shah of Navrangpura, while his friend, 33-year-old Mukund Pranavkumar Patel, was seated beside him.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was allegedly travelling at a high speed and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall into the trench near the canal embankment. Both occupants sustained injuries, though police said their condition was not serious.
The injured men were rushed to Zydus Hospital for treatment. Police received information about the accident at around 4 am, by which time a PCR van from Ranip Police Station had already reached the spot. Later, hospital authorities informed the police about the details of the case. After receiving primary medical treatment, both men were discharged from the hospital.
The unusual accident has raised concerns among local residents about safety arrangements and access control measures around the ongoing canal and redevelopment works. Police have registered a case against the driver for allegedly driving in a manner that endangered public safety and have initiated further legal action.
