The ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran have disrupted global LPG supply chains, creating challenges in several countries, including India. While the Indian government has instructed oil marketing companies to maintain sufficient LPG stock, consumers are also witnessing an increase in gas cylinder prices.
Following recent revisions, the prices of commercial LPG cylinders and 5-kg LPG cylinders have been increased once again. However, many consumers remain unaware of certain conditions associated with the 5-kg cylinder, popularly known as the ‘Chhotu’ cylinder. One such condition is an additional charge for home delivery.
Rs 25 Delivery Charge for Chhotu Cylinder
According to Indian Oil, customers can get refills of the 5-kg ‘Chhotu’ LPG cylinder delivered to their homes through designated Points of Sale. However, an additional delivery charge of Rs 25 per refill is applicable for this service.
The Chhotu cylinder can be purchased from authorized Indane distributors, Indian Oil retail outlets, and selected supermarkets and grocery stores. Refills are also available through authorized distributors and Points of Sale across the country.
A major advantage of the Chhotu cylinder is that customers do not need address proof to obtain a connection. An identity card alone is sufficient. Additionally, if a customer decides to return the cylinder, the company provides a fixed refund of Rs 500 per cylinder, irrespective of the duration of use.
Cylinder Prices Revised
Effective June 1, prices of both commercial LPG cylinders and 5-kg cylinders were revised upward. The cost of the 5-kg LPG cylinder has increased by Rs 11 and now stands at Rs 821.50. Meanwhile, the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has gone up by Rs 42. In Delhi, the revised rate is Rs 3,113.50 compared to the earlier price of Rs 3,071.50.
This follows a steep increase of Rs 993 in commercial cylinder prices implemented on May 1. Domestic consumers, however, have received some relief, as the price of the standard 14.2-kg LPG cylinder remains unchanged at Rs 913. The last revision in domestic LPG prices was a Rs 60 increase in early March.
Oil marketing companies review LPG prices every month, and rates may differ from state to state depending on local taxes such as Value Added Tax (VAT).
Who Is the Chhotu Cylinder Meant For?
According to Indian Oil, the Chhotu cylinder was introduced primarily for residents of urban and semi-urban areas, particularly those living in rented accommodation or individuals who do not possess local address proof. The initiative aims to make LPG access easier and more convenient for a wider section of consumers.
