In a significant boost to rail connectivity for residents of western Ahmedabad, Indian Railways has announced the launch of the first long-distance express service originating from Gandhigram railway station. Until now, the station primarily handled two local passenger services operating towards the Bhavnagar section.
The newly introduced Train No. 09437/09438 Gandhigram–Prayagraj Bi-Weekly Special will run on special fares and is believed to be the first express train service to originate from a city station other than Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) or Sabarmati, marking a major milestone for Gandhigram station.
According to the schedule, Train No. 09437 Gandhigram–Prayagraj Bi-Weekly Special will depart from Gandhigram at 5.20 pm every Sunday and Wednesday between May 31 and July 15, reaching Prayagraj at 8 pm the following day. In the return direction, Train No. 09438 Prayagraj–Gandhigram Bi-Weekly Special will leave Prayagraj at 4.15 pm every Saturday and Tuesday from May 30 to July 14 and arrive at Gandhigram at 3.30 pm the next day.
En route, the train will halt at Chandkheda Road, Mehsana, Palanpur, Abu Road, Falna, Marwar Junction, Ajmer, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Idgah, Tundla, Etawah, Govindpuri and Fatehpur stations. The train will comprise Second Class, Sleeper Class and AC 3-Tier coaches to cater to different categories of passengers.
Railway officials said the new service is expected to offer greater convenience to travellers from western parts of Ahmedabad by reducing their dependence on Ahmedabad Junction and Sabarmati stations. Bookings for Train No. 09437 Gandhigram–Prayagraj Bi-Weekly Special will commence on May 30, 2026.
