The controversy surrounding hostels at NHL Medical College has intensified after an inspection reportedly found more than 300 air-conditioners and coolers installed across hostel rooms, raising serious questions about rule violations and administrative monitoring.
The issue first surfaced after allegations that students staying in hostels managed by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) were being charged unofficial monthly payments for facilities not allowed under hostel regulations.
According to the allegations, students were permitted to use air-conditioners and coolers after paying nearly ₹5,000 every month, despite hostel rules banning such appliances. Similar claims were made regarding refrigerators and induction stoves, with allegations that the money collected was unofficial and not deposited through government channels.
Students seeking single-room accommodation were also allegedly asked to pay between ₹8,000 and ₹10,000 per month, even though hostel rules require room sharing. There were also allegations that some former students continued staying in the hostels after making unofficial payments.
The controversy has raised concerns over hostel administration and supervision, especially as hostel committees reportedly include senior doctors and department heads.
Following media reports, notices were reportedly placed on hostel boards claiming no student had submitted complaints regarding the issue. The move attracted attention as it appeared to dismiss the allegations before any detailed inquiry was completed.
The matter deepened after inspections reportedly found over 300 AC units and coolers across 494 boys’ and girls’ hostel rooms. Sources claimed that nearly 25 AC units were discovered on a single floor.
Based on allegations that ₹5,000 was charged per AC installation, unofficial collections may have crossed ₹15 lakh per month. However, these figures are based on allegations and have not been officially verified.
Additional concerns surfaced after a girl identified as Mruganshi was allegedly found staying in the hostel despite reportedly not being a student of the college.
Sources claimed she informed the inspection committee that permission to install a cooler had been given by the girls’ hostel rector, Komal Madam. The development has raised further questions about hostel access rules and enforcement.
The controversy widened further after claims involving Assistant Executive Jigna Vegda, who was reportedly linked to the inspection process. Sources alleged she is the wife of boys’ hostel rector Ajit Vegda and also serves as personal assistant to the hostel dean, prompting discussions over a possible conflict of interest.
No official statement responding to these allegations was immediately available.
With inspection findings now under scrutiny, pressure is growing on authorities to initiate administrative and legal action if violations are confirmed.
The controversy has also triggered broader concerns about whether enough action was taken despite allegations of unofficial collections, large-scale AC installations, and repeated hostel rule violations within one of Ahmedabad’s prominent municipal medical institutions.
