Universities across Gujarat have finalised different merit formulas for undergraduate admissions under the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS), with varying weightage given to students from Gujarat and those from outside the state. Most universities have continued with their previous admission policies, while Gujarat University is the only university to revise its formula this year.
Gujarat University has introduced a 90:10 merit ratio, giving 90 per cent weightage to students from Gujarat schools, regardless of their board, and 10 per cent to students from outside Gujarat. Admission coordinator NK Jain said the earlier board-based division could create unfairness among students from different boards within Gujarat, leading to the change.
Gujarat Technological University (GTU), which offers eight undergraduate courses under GCAS, has adopted a 95:5 ratio. Under this formula, 95 per cent seats will be reserved for Gujarat-based students from all boards except NIOS, while 5 per cent will be allotted to students from outside Gujarat. GTU officials said the decision was taken to maintain uniformity with admissions under ACPC.
Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) will continue with its 80:20 ratio. Vice-Chancellor Kishorsing Chavda said the university receives a higher number of applications from Gujarat board students compared to other boards, which influenced the continuation of the existing formula.
Meanwhile, Saurashtra University has decided to prepare a common merit list for students from Gujarat Board, CBSE, and other boards without considering the applicant’s state or board separately. The university said the 80:20 model has worked effectively for many years and remains widely accepted.
With several universities still finalising their merit formulas, students are closely tracking the admission criteria to understand how their chances may be affected during the admission process.
GCAS has also redesigned its undergraduate admission process by introducing a continuous registration system. Students can now apply across four different admission rounds instead of depending on a single deadline.
The change was introduced after universities requested an extension of the May 28 registration deadline, as many students were still waiting for their Class 12 mark sheets.
Under the new system:
- Round 1: May 7–28
- Round 2: May 30–June 6
- Round 3: June 8–13
- Round 4: June 15–20
Each round will generate separate merit lists and seat allotments based on the applications received up to that stage.
Officials said the revised process is aimed at making admissions more flexible and student-friendly, while the GCAS portal will continue handling registrations, document uploads, and applications.
