The Gujarat government and Forest Department have intensified surveillance after two Asiatic lion deaths were suspected to be linked to Babesia disease.
Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia said forest teams and expert veterinary doctors are closely monitoring the health of lions showing suspected symptoms in Gir and nearby areas. He added that the department is on high alert and has put all precautionary measures in place for early detection, timely treatment, and prevention of further spread of the disease.
According to experts, Babesia is a tick-borne protozoan parasite that causes an infectious blood disease known as babesiosis. The parasite enters a lion’s bloodstream through tick bites and attacks red blood cells. As it multiplies, it destroys these cells, leading to severe anaemia, weakness, and loss of appetite in lions.
Lions are believed to contract the infection through tick infestations or mite bites picked up from the forest floor. Forest officials said continuous field monitoring and health assessments are being carried out to protect the health of the Asiatic lions in the Gir region.
