Ahmedabad is gearing up to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games as part of India’s larger push to strengthen its bid for the 2036 Olympics, with the Gujarat government fast-tracking major sports infrastructure projects around the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera.
In a significant move, the state government has granted in-principle approval for Rs 500 crore to kick-start the proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Sports Enclave project, including land acquisition and preliminary development work. The mega sports complex, estimated to cost Rs 5,050 crore, will be spread across 236 acres in Ahmedabad.
The Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department has approved the initial allocation to develop a world-class multi-sports ecosystem around the Narendra Modi Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 1.30 lakh spectators. Apart from cricket infrastructure, the proposed sports enclave will include facilities for more than 50 Olympic disciplines. The Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) has also received administrative approval to carry out land acquisition and related formalities, with the government aiming to complete the project within the next four to five years.
Separately, the Gujarat government has sanctioned Rs 100 crore during the current financial year under a broader Rs 2,900 crore plan to upgrade infrastructure at the Karai Police Academy near Motera for future international sporting events. While India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics is still under consideration, reports suggest that Ahmedabad has been accepted as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The government has also made a token budgetary provision of Rs 1 crore in the first phase of planning for the event.
