More than 35,000 medical stores across Gujarat remained shut on Tuesday as chemists participated in a nationwide one-day strike protesting unresolved issues, especially the continued operation of online medicine sales despite repeated representations to the government.
The agitation is part of a countrywide protest involving nearly 12.40 lakh chemists across India, including around 3,000 medical stores in Ahmedabad, all of which suspended operations for the day.
Chemist associations said their long-pending concerns regarding e-pharmacies and online drug sales have not been addressed, forcing them to intensify their protest.Associations alleged that online medicine platforms are functioning without adequate regulation, raising concerns over patient safety, misuse of medicines, and unfair trade practices.
After several unsuccessful attempts to seek government intervention, traders decided to observe the shutdown.To prevent inconvenience to patients during emergencies, special arrangements were made across various districts and cities.
The state Food and Drug Department also issued a district-wise list of 832 medical stores across Gujarat that remained operational during the strike to ensure the availability of essential medicines and emergency support.
Officials advised citizens to check the list of open pharmacies in their respective districts to avoid difficulties in accessing medicines.
