Customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport seized 16,600 sticks of foreign-origin cigarettes from two passengers who arrived from Abu Dhabi on May 17.
According to officials, the passengers — one from Malappuram and the other from Kozhikode in Kerala — had landed in Ahmedabad on an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi.
During the inspection, customs authorities recovered foreign cigarette brands, including Manchester and Dunhill, which were allegedly being smuggled into the country in violation of customs rules.
The entire consignment was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is currently underway.
