A judge of the Gujarat High Court on Monday asked a student from Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar to step out of the courtroom, saying her attire was not appropriate.
The student, who was wearing jeans and a shirt, had come to court to challenge her semester-long suspension over alleged indiscipline and rude behaviour with staff.
When her lawyer defended her clothing, Justice Nizar Desai said that while everyone has the freedom to choose what they wear, they should dress properly when coming to court. He also said the court is a “temple of justice” and its dignity must be maintained.
The student, in the final semester of her MA course, told the court that her suspension happened after an argument with a staff member over insufficient funds for fieldwork. She also claimed the institute’s action was influenced by an earlier issue related to hostel rules.
Her lawyer requested the court to allow her to complete her course and said she is ready to apologise again.
After the hearing, the court issued a notice to the institute and scheduled the next hearing for April 29, 2026.
