Gujarat is currently grappling with a severe heatwave, leaving residents to cope with extreme conditions over the past few days. With temperatures soaring, busy city streets have turned eerily quiet during peak afternoon hours, resembling a self-imposed curfew.
According to the India Meteorological Department, temperatures could rise an additional 2 to 3°C in just the next 48 hours. Several cities are already experiencing scorching conditions, reporting temperatures above 40°C. Amreli and Ahmedabad have recorded highs of 40.8°C while Surendranagar reached 40.5°C. Other cities like Rajkot and Vadodara reported similar sweltering figures of 40.4°C and Gandhinagar at 40.2°C respectively. Coastal areas like Surat and Kandla are slightly cooler at 36.8°C and 35.8°C.
The escalating temperatures have led to a surge in heat-related illnesses, prompting the state health department to ramp up its preparedness measures. Dedicated heatstroke management rooms are now operational in all district and sub-district hospitals for immediate patient care.
Health authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution during peak heat hours between 1 pm and 4 pm—advising them to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, wear light clothing, cover their heads, and remain hydrated with water or beverages like buttermilk and coconut water.
Officials report an increase in cases showing symptoms of heatstroke including dizziness and dehydration among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women. Hospitals have been instructed to keep adequate supplies of ORS solutions and ice packs readily available.
As the relentless heatwave continues for several more days, authorities have activated a comprehensive Heat-Health Action Plan across districts aimed at mitigating impacts while ensuring timely medical responses.
