Amid rising temperatures and scorching summer conditions, the Surat City Traffic Police has decided to temporarily shut down traffic signals during afternoon hours to provide relief to commuters, particularly two-wheeler riders.
Under the new arrangement, traffic signals on select major roads will either be switched off or set to blinking mode between 1 pm and 4 pm at locations with relatively lighter traffic. The aim is to reduce the time motorists spend waiting at junctions under extreme heat.
The decision comes as Surat continues to witness severe heat, with temperatures nearing 40°C, making daytime travel especially challenging. Taking the situation into account, the Police Commissioner approved the measure in the interest of public safety and convenience.
To ensure smooth traffic flow and avoid mishaps, traffic personnel and members of the traffic brigade will be stationed at key intersections to manually regulate vehicular movement during these hours.
Additionally, artificial shade structures have been set up at several busy junctions, wherever possible, to offer protection from direct sunlight. Authorities have also urged four-wheeler drivers to be considerate and allow two-wheeler riders to use these shaded areas.
Officials said the move is aimed at prioritising citizens’ health and safety during the ongoing heatwave.
