A viral video of a student dancing to a Bollywood song during a cultural event at Maharaja Sayajirao University has sparked controversy and strong reactions from student groups.
The video shows a student from the Faculty of Arts performing to the song “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” during the three-day ‘Sanskar Sangam’ event held at the university’s C C Mehta Auditorium.
The event was organised by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), but rival group National Students’ Union of India criticised the performance, calling it “obscene”.
NSUI leaders said such acts should not be part of cultural programmes. They demanded action against those involved and called for a ban on groups promoting such activities, warning of protests if no steps are taken.
Amid the row, ABVP clarified that the student in the video was not an official participant. The group said about 140 students were registered for the event, which included traditional dance, drama and cultural walk.
According to ABVP, the student came on stage during a break after repeatedly requesting permission, and the performance was different from what was earlier indicated. They also said the music could not be stopped midway.
ABVP further added that the video was not shared on any of its official platforms and was uploaded on the student’s personal social media account.
