In a key development in the suspected food poisoning case in Ahmedabad’s Chandkheda, police on Tuesday exhumed the body of a two-and-a-half-month-old infant for a detailed post-mortem.
The body was taken out from a cremation ground under tight police security, with a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team present. The process began around 10 am and was carried out as per legal procedures with the family’s consent.
Assistant Commissioner of Police D V Rana said the step was needed to find out the exact cause of death, adding that the family has cooperated with the investigation.
Police Inspector Jayesh Makwana said the body has been sent to Civil Hospital in Asarwa for examination and will be returned to the family afterward.
The incident took place on April 6, when two sisters — aged two-and-a-half months and four years — died after allegedly eating dosas made from batter bought from a local shop. While the elder child’s post-mortem was done earlier, the infant had been buried as per custom, leading to the exhumation.
Police said the family had bought dosa batter from a nearby dairy a few days before the incident. After eating the food, all family members reportedly suffered severe vomiting and other symptoms the next morning.
While the two children died, their parents, Vimal and Bhavna Prajapati, are still in critical condition at a private hospital.
Officials have started a detailed probe, and food samples have been sent for testing. All possible causes, including food contamination, are being examined.
