To ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility, Ahmedabad will soon introduce a fully digital parking management system.
Under the Smart City initiative, Ahmedabad Smart City Development Limited has floated a tender to implement an AI-based video analytics smart parking system across the city. AI cameras will be installed at parking locations to monitor real-time space availability. At present, most parking sites lack such technology.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation currently operates on-street, off-street and multi-level parking for two- and four-wheelers, largely under the pay-and-park model run by private contractors. However, the rising number of vehicles and daily inflow from outside the city have led to frequent parking chaos, traffic jams, higher pollution and fuel wastage.
To address these issues, the civic body plans to deploy a technology-driven solution expected to save time and fuel for motorists.
Real-time parking capacity
Once implemented, the system will manage parking for over 12,000 cars and 35,000 two-wheelers across the city.
- On-street: Two-wheelers – 18,774 | Four-wheelers – 6,936
- Off-street: Two-wheelers – 14,517 | Four-wheelers – 1,003
- Multi-level: Two-wheelers – 1,946 | Four-wheelers – 1,459
Key features
- QR code-based digital payments for on-street parking
- Fully automated payments at off-street facilities
- Real-time parking updates via a digital platform
- Automated entry, exit and enforcement using number plate recognition and boom barriers
- Smart guidance to available parking slots to reduce congestion and pollution
