Ahmedabad unveils masterplan for 350-acre Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave

Ahmedabad has unveiled the masterplan for the 350-acre Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Sports Enclave, a large sports and recreation hub planned along the Sabarmati River near the 132,000-seat Narendra Modi Stadium. The project aims to combine world-class sports infrastructure with extensive public open spaces designed for year-round community use.

Envisioned as a major urban park, the enclave will integrate international-standard sporting venues with plazas, landscaped gardens, and pedestrian-friendly streets. The development comes as the city prepares to host the Commonwealth Games Federation’s centenary celebrations in 2030, while Gujarat is also set to host the 2029 World Police & Fire Games. Officials expect the upcoming events to accelerate infrastructure development and create employment opportunities in hospitality and retail sectors.

Key venues planned

The masterplan proposes three major competition venues along with a dedicated training institute:

  • International Tennis Centre: Planned as one of the largest tennis facilities in the country, the centre will feature a 10,000-seat main court, 5,000- and 3,000-seat show courts, and eight additional match courts. Designed with a lightweight roof for shade and natural ventilation, the venue will later operate as a public tennis club.
  • National Institute of Sports Excellence: Located between the tennis complex and the Narendra Modi Stadium, the institute will include training halls, gymnasiums, recovery facilities, and sports science centres for athletes and coaches.
  • Indoor Arena: An 18,000-seat indoor stadium is proposed for events such as gymnastics and basketball, along with concerts and sports like kabaddi. The structure will incorporate architectural elements inspired by traditional Gujarati jali screens for shading and climate control.
  • Aquatic Centre: Designed to accommodate 12,000 spectators during major tournaments and 4,000 afterward, the aquatic complex will host swimming, diving, and artistic swimming competitions, and later function as a public leisure and training facility.

Public spaces and long-term use

The Sabarmati riverfront edge within the enclave will be developed as a central Games Plaza for ceremonies and large gatherings, later converted into a public zone featuring dining areas, sports courts, and landscaped gardens. The larger sports park is envisioned as a “green lung” for the city, remaining open to residents even after international events conclude.

Project planners said the design emphasises climate-responsive architecture, integration with natural surroundings, and long-term usability to ensure the venues remain active and accessible. The SVP Sports Enclave is expected to become a major addition to Ahmedabad’s sports infrastructure and a key component of the city’s long-term urban development plans.
