The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) is set to undergo major technological and environmental upgrades after the Transport Committee approved a budget of ₹1,011 crore for the 2026–27 financial year. The approved budget is significantly higher than the initial draft estimate of ₹911 crore proposed by Transport Manager and Deputy Commissioner Amrutesh Aurangabadkar.
As part of its digital push, AMTS will introduce artificial intelligence to improve bus operations. A provision of ₹3 crore has been earmarked for dynamic scheduling software based on AI. The system will study real-time passenger demand and traffic conditions to optimise bus schedules, ensuring better availability of buses during peak hours and on busy routes.
Another key feature of the budget is the launch of a “Clean Air Bus Programme” aimed at improving air quality inside buses. Since air-conditioned buses are airtight and can trap pollutants, ₹3 crore has been allocated to install advanced air purification systems in 70 AC buses.
To meet the growing transport needs of Ahmedabad and nearby peripheral villages, AMTS also plans to expand its fleet. Transport Committee chairman Dharamshi Desai said the total number of operational buses will be increased to over 1,600. The budget also includes provisions for the purchase of four additional modern electric AC double-decker buses.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the AMC, Shehzad Pathan, alleged that the budget would largely benefit private bus operators. He raised concerns over the rising number of accidents involving contract buses and claimed that several drivers are inadequately trained or lack proper licences. He also alleged instances of drivers using mobile phones while driving and operating buses under the influence of alcohol.
