The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, has announced plans to set up a dedicated Department for International Students from the 2026–27 academic year. The announcement was made during the institute’s 45th convocation held on Thursday at its Gandhinagar campus.
The new department will act as a single-window platform for international admissions, student support services and global academic collaborations, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the vision of promoting “Internationalisation at Home”.
NID will place special emphasis on attracting students from the Global South, especially from low-income countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. To ensure inclusive access to design education, the institute plans to offer freeships and tailored support mechanisms for international students.
At the convocation ceremony, a total of 543 students were awarded degrees across various design programmes. This included one PhD graduate, 355 students from the Master of Design programme and 187 students who completed the Bachelor of Design programme.
The convocation address was delivered virtually by Dr V Narayanan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The event was also attended by Dinesh Kumar Singh, Distinguished Scientist and Director of the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC), ISRO, Department of Space.
