Chandra Grahan 2026 in India: Date, Timings and Sutak Guidelines

In Hindu belief, a Chandra Grahan (lunar eclipse) is considered a significant period for spiritual purification. Devotees often spend this time chanting mantras, meditating, and later offering prayers to the Moon God, who is believed to dispel negativity and restore balance in life.

In 2026, there will be four eclipses in total. However, only one lunar eclipse will be visible in India, making this Chandra Grahan especially important.

Chandra Grahan 2026: Date and Day

The first and only lunar eclipse visible in India in 2026 will occur on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Notably, it coincides with Holika Dahan (Choti Holi), adding to its religious significance.

The detailed timings of the lunar eclipse in India are as follows:

  • Penumbral phase begins: 2:16 PM
  • Umbral phase begins: 3:21 PM
  • Maximum eclipse: 6:26 PM to 6:46 PM
  • Umbral phase ends: 6:46 PM
  • Penumbral phase ends: 7:52 PM

Since the eclipse will be visible in India, traditional religious observances associated with Chandra Grahan will apply.

What Is the Sutak Period?

The Sutak period is considered inauspicious and begins several hours before an eclipse, ending once the eclipse concludes. Certain activities are traditionally avoided during this time.

Chandra Grahan 2026 Sutak Timings

As the lunar eclipse is visible in India, Sutak will be observed.

  • Sutak begins: 9:39 AM
  • Sutak ends: 6:46 PM

For children, elderly people, pregnant women, and those who are unwell, Sutak rules are relaxed.

  • Relaxed Sutak period: 3:28 PM to 6:46 PM

Rules and Practices Followed During Sutak

During the Sutak period, many families observe the following traditions:

  • Avoid cooking and eating food
  • Keep temples closed
  • Postpone auspicious ceremonies and celebrations
  • Maintain physical and mental purity
  • Engage in prayers, mantra chanting, and meditation

Sutak customs may differ based on regional and family traditions, and individuals are advised to follow practices that align with their beliefs.
