Ahead of New Year celebrations and the expected surge in crowds, the Ahmedabad Police have announced traffic restrictions and diversions on several key city roads from the evening of December 31 until the early hours of January 1.
The notification, issued by Commissioner of Police G S Malik on December 26 under the Gujarat Police Act and Gujarat Motor Vehicles Rules, aims to maintain public safety, smooth traffic flow and law and order during the festivities.
As per the advisory, CG Road will be closed to all vehicles from Stadium Circle to Panchvati between 6 pm on December 31 and 3 am on January 1. Parking on both sides of the road will also be prohibited, while complete vehicular movement on this stretch will be barred from 8 pm onwards.
Motorists have been advised to use alternate routes such as crossing CG Road via connecting roads near the Samatheshwar Mahadev–Bodyline junction, routes from Mithakhali Circle through Girish Cold Drinks junction to St Xavier’s College Road, or from Navrangpura bus stand via Swastik crossroads to Commerce Six Roads.
Similarly, Sindhu Bhavan Road will remain closed in both directions from Jajarmaan crossroads to Taj Skyline crossroads between 8 pm on December 31 and 3 am on January 1. Traffic will be diverted via Jajarmaan crossroads towards Taj Skyline through Umiya Traders T, and via the Ambli overbridge towards Shilaj Circle.
The police have also imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy and medium goods vehicles across the city, while regulating passenger vehicle movement during the night. On the Sarkhej–Gandhinagar (SG) Highway, all vehicles except permitted passenger vehicles will be restricted during the notified hours, with motorists advised to use the Sardar Patel Ring Road instead.
Parking will be banned on SG Road and its service lanes from Pakwan crossroads to Sanand Chowkdi, as well as on the stretch from Nehrunagar Circle to Shivranjani and ISKCON crossroads during the restriction period.
Emergency services, including ambulances, fire brigade vehicles and government vehicles on duty, have been exempted from these restrictions.
The police have warned that violations will attract action under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Gujarat Police Act. Officers from the rank of joint or additional commissioner down to constables have been authorised to take action against offenders.
Citizens have been urged to plan their travel in advance, follow traffic advisories and cooperate with police personnel to ensure a safe and orderly New Year celebration.
