Residents of SnehAnjali Society in Thaltej have warned they will set themselves on fire if the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) goes ahead with the demolition of their homes.
Tension escalated on Monday when an AMC team reached the society to disconnect water and drainage connections. However, the officials were forced to retreat after residents blocked the main gate and staged a protest.
The residents, who say they have been living in the society for nearly 40 years, are opposing a Supreme Court order that clears the way for the demolition of about 25 houses. Sources said the AMC is preparing to carry out the demolition in the coming days in compliance with the apex court’s directions.
SC verdict in favour of original landowner
The dispute revolves around land ownership. Established in 1983, the society has housed families for four decades. However, it later came to light that the houses were allegedly constructed and sold illegally by persons other than the original landowner.
The matter eventually reached the Supreme Court, which ruled in favour of the original landowner. Following the verdict, the landowner sought the demolition of the unauthorised structures, prompting the AMC to initiate action by cutting off civic amenities.
Residents block civic action
When AMC officials arrived on Monday to disconnect utility lines, residents gathered at the society entrance and protested. They issued stark warnings of self-immolation if bulldozers were deployed, resulting in a prolonged standoff.
Faced with strong resistance, the AMC team withdrew without carrying out the disconnection.
Police protection to be sought
The AMC is now expected to seek police protection before resuming action. The TDO department will lead the operation to evacuate the residents and demolish the bungalows.
