Gujarat Falls Behind India in EV Sales Despite Strong Auto Growth

Gujarat Falls Behind India in EV Sales Despite Strong Auto Growth

Despite strong momentum in overall automobile sales, Gujarat continues to lag behind the national average in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, according to the latest data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Overall auto market surges
Gujarat’s retail automobile market recorded a robust 19% year-on-year growth in November 2025, far ahead of India’s modest 2.14% rise.

However, EV uptake tells a different story.

The state witnessed around 7,000 EV sales in November 2025 compared to about 4,000 in November 2024—an increase of 75%. Nationally, EV sales climbed from 1.93 lakh units in November 2024 to 2.17 lakh units this year, reflecting 88% growth.

Ahmedabad reflects the state pattern
In Ahmedabad, overall vehicle sales surged:

  • Cars: 8,100 units (vs 5,429 in 2024) – nearly 50% growth
  • Two-wheelers: 23,635 units (vs 19,436 in 2024) – 22% growth

But EV penetration remains very low—EV cars form only a tiny portion of total car sales, while EV two-wheelers are still in single-digit percentages.

Why EV adoption is lagging
FADA Gujarat chairman Pranav Shah said the slow pace is mainly due to inadequate charging infrastructure and limited financial incentives.

“EV infrastructure is poor, and there aren’t enough subsidies to attract buyers,” he told Mirror. He added that unlike metro cities such as Bengaluru—where EV adoption is higher across commercial and passenger segments—Ahmedabad and other major Gujarat cities have yet to cultivate a similar culture.
