Authorities are actively considering building a new three-lane bridge parallel to the ageing Subhash Bridge while major repair work is carried out on the 52-year-old structure.
Officials say the bridge will likely remain closed for at least six months as detailed repairs and stability tests continue. Subhash Bridge, an important link to the airport and the upcoming revamped Gandhi Ashram, has developed serious cracks on both its upper and lower sections. Although one testing agency recommended partial reopening, the state government has ruled it out due to safety concerns.
“We cannot compromise on safety. The issues are significant,” a senior official told Mirror.
Four specialised agencies have been appointed to assess the bridge. Teams from SVNIT Surat and IITs in Gandhinagar and Roorkee will conduct tests this week. A Vadodara-based agency completed its inspection on Monday and will soon submit its report. Engineers from the Roads and Buildings Department have also conducted inspections, with mixed opinions—some supporting a partial reopening.
To manage long-term traffic needs, the government is moving ahead with plans for a three-lane parallel bridge, similar to the Chimanbhai Patel Bridge. After repairs, the current bridge will be used only by light vehicles and two-wheelers.
The existing Subhash Bridge is 453 metres long and 12.8 metres wide, with two lanes on each side. Officials say this project fits into the larger citywide infrastructure upgrade ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, during which all bridges will be examined and strengthened.
