Gujarat University is set to open more of its long-pending sports facilities as Ahmedabad gears up for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The university’s Olympic-standard swimming pool and boxing ring—unused for years—will finally be made available to athletes within the next two weeks.
The university, which is hosting the Tennis Premier League at its advanced courts this December, will soon inaugurate both the indoor Olympic-size pool and the boxing ring at the ₹102 crore Gujarat University Sardar Patel Sports City.
Vice Chancellor Neerja Gupta said the indoor pool, the only one of its kind in Gujarat, is almost ready after resolving a major water-connection issue. “The Olympic-standard pool with a viewing gallery is ready, and the boxing ring will be functional next week. We are also considering adding a solar water-heating system to keep the pool warm,” she said.
She added that with GU now hosting national and international events, there is growing momentum to open all unused facilities. A team from the Olympics recently inspected the swimming pool and the rifle shooting range at the sports city.
“The city is ready for sports, and we are showcasing the strength of our sports city. Some facilities will be run by the university, while others may be handed to experienced sports associations,” she said.
The indoor sports complex includes facilities for badminton, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, boxing, judo, taekwondo, wrestling, a multi-court arena with viewing galleries, and a 50m × 25m Olympic-size pool.
