If you have an empty piece of land, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) wants you to use it as a paid parking space.
AMC has proposed a new policy allowing citizens to rent out their open plots for parking and directly collect charges from users — with the civic body taking no share for now. The idea is to reduce the city’s growing parking problems. Commercial buildings with more than ten shops may also have to appoint a “parking facilitator” to ensure vehicles are parked properly.
People interested in offering their land for parking will need to upload details on the AMC app. Though AMC won’t take any revenue initially, it may introduce a revenue-sharing model after a year.
The new parking policy has been drafted and is waiting for approval.
AMC has also suggested new types of parking permits — monthly, three-monthly, six-monthly and yearly — for individuals and institutions. Municipal Commissioner B N Pani said illegal parking will face strict action.
A pilot project on Sindhu Bhavan Road will test the new rules, with fines between ₹1,000 and ₹3,000 for cars and up to ₹100 for two-wheelers.
However, the ruling BJP is delaying the policy for now. With elections coming up, leaders don’t want to risk upsetting citizens with rules that may be seen as an extra burden, even if it could help fix the parking chaos.
