Fourteen MBBS students from GMERS Medical College, Gandhinagar, were suspended from their hostel on Monday for allegedly ragging first-year students. The disciplinary action—ranging from six months to two years—followed an inquiry triggered by a complaint filed last week by freshers.
According to the complaint, second- and third-year students allegedly forced first-year students to stand in the hostel premises to give their “introduction.”
Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said, “Seven third-year and seven second-year students were involved in mentally harassing first-year students. After the complaint, a swift investigation was carried out. The seven third-year students have been suspended from the hostel for two years, while the seven second-year students have been suspended for six months.”
He added that CCTV footage was reviewed during the probe, confirming the misconduct. “These students displayed antisocial and inappropriate behaviour. Strict action has been taken, and they have been instructed to improve their conduct,” Pansheriya said.
Urging students to act responsibly, the minister said future doctors must uphold humanity and avoid hurting others. He cautioned that similar incidents elsewhere would also invite immediate action, which could impact the careers of those involved.
