The Gujarat government’s Labour and Employment Department has decided to discontinue the long-running ‘Career Corner’ initiative, which provided school and college students with guidance on career opportunities after their studies.
Officials said the decision was made considering the changing times, as students now prefer online platforms and digital tools for career-related information instead of classroom-based counselling.Until recently, Career Corner sessions were held in about 1,075 schools and 295 colleges across the state, where teachers conducted weekly classes introducing students to various professions.Following the move, circulars have been issued to all district employment offices to shut down the programme and submit final reports. The department has also clarified that any pending payments for the 2025–26 academic year will be cleared.
Teachers conducting these sessions received ₹25 per class — roughly ₹800 a year — a low remuneration that, along with heavy paperwork, led to limited participation in many institutions.
The programme, which once operated in nearly 2,000 schools and colleges, was reduced to around 1,400 units in recent years. Its discontinuation has now drawn criticism from the opposition.
