Gen Z Employee’s ‘Breakup Leave’ Goes Viral, CEO Calls It the Most Honest Request

A leave application from a Gen Z employee citing a breakup as the reason for time off has gone viral online, sparking a spirited debate between millennials and Gen Z over work culture and emotional honesty.

The incident came to light after Jasveer Singh, CEO and co-founder of a social media platform, shared the request on LinkedIn, calling it the “most honest leave application” he had ever received.

According to Singh’s post, the employee wrote:

Got the most honest leave application yesterday. Gen Z doesn’t do filters! pic.twitter.com/H0J27L5EsE

“Hello Sir. I recently had a breakup and haven’t been able to focus on work. I need a short break. I’m working from home today, so I’d like to take leave from the 28th to the 8th.”

Impressed by the candid tone, Singh captioned the post, “Got the most honest leave application yesterday. Gen Z doesn’t do filters!” In a follow-up comment, he confirmed that the leave had been approved.

The post quickly went viral, amassing over two million views and igniting discussions about changing workplace attitudes. While many praised the employee’s honesty and the boss’s empathy, others used the opportunity to contrast generational differences in professional behavior.

“Gen Z breaks up and applies for leave. Millennials broke down, cried in the washroom, and still met deadlines,” one user joked. Another commented, “I would approve it immediately; honesty plus awareness of one’s emotional state — that’s a good employee.”

The exchange has since become symbolic of how Gen Z employees are reshaping workplace norms, prioritizing mental well-being and open communication over traditional notions of emotional restraint.
