Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a warning that the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 27, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh over the weekend.
According to the IMD forecast, the system will gradually strengthen — forming a depression on October 25, a deep depression on October 26, and developing into a cyclone by October 27 morning. While the exact point of landfall is still being determined, early projections indicate that Andhra Pradesh is likely to be the most affected, with Odisha expected to experience heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
Under the system’s influence, several parts of both states are likely to see wind speeds reaching 60–70 kmph, particularly between October 27 and 29, when the storm’s intensity is expected to peak.
IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty said, “The system is likely to impact Andhra Pradesh, but Odisha will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in coastal districts between October 27 and 29.”
Districts including Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurdha, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri are expected to receive significant rainfall starting October 27. Most regions of the state will continue to experience rain on October 28 and 29, she added.
Meteorologists have also stated that while various models, including international forecasts, predict the formation of a small to moderate-scale cyclone, its final intensity will be clearer within the next 24 hours.
Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and coastal areas to stay vigilant and follow official advisories as the system advances toward the east coast. Continuous monitoring of the storm’s path and strength is underway to ensure timely warnings and preparedness measures.
