Ahmedabad is on the brink of global sporting glory, with the Commonwealth Sport’s Executive Board recommending the city as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games—virtually confirming India’s return to the event after two decades.
The final approval, seen as a formality, will be given on November 26 at the organisation’s General Assembly in Glasgow. India last hosted the Games in 2010 in New Delhi.
If ratified, Ahmedabad’s selection will mark a major step in India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics, which is also proposed for the city.
India’s bid triumphed over Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. Commonwealth Sport said it would help Abuja strengthen its candidature for future editions, including 2034.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah celebrated the news on X, calling it “a day of immense joy and pride for India,” while Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel described it as “a proud moment for Gujarat and India.”
Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi termed the recommendation “a huge moment for Indian sport,” and Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said it reflected “India’s growing dominance in global sport.”
Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha hailed it as an “extraordinary honour” for India to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games.
