GTU Makes Exams More Accessible for Students with Disabilities

GTU Makes Exams More Accessible for Students with Disabilities

In a move to promote inclusivity, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has introduced new rules to make examinations more accessible for students with disabilities. Students can now use personal or institute-provided assistive devices, including braille slates, magnifiers, and hearing aids.

The university also allows question papers to be provided in Braille, large print, or as soft copies compatible with screen readers.

The decision follows approval by the GTU Academic Council to have separate examination guidelines for students with benchmark disabilities (40% or more). Eligible students may also receive assistance from a scribe, reader, writer, or helper during exams.

The circular emphasizes maintaining confidentiality and dignity regarding a student’s disability to prevent discrimination in exams and academic accommodations.

Key provisions include:

Students with special needs will have a dedicated examination block with proper seating.

A junior supervisor will be assigned to support and monitor students in this block.

Examiners are encouraged to accommodate alternative modes of expression, such as verbal or oral answers, wherever feasible.

Flexibility may be provided in internal assessment deadlines and minimum attendance requirements for genuine disability-related cases, as determined by the institute.

This step is aimed at ensuring equal opportunities and a supportive environment for all students during examinations.
