Why Samosa Is More Than Just a Snack for Amdavadis

Why Samosa Is More Than Just a Snack for Amdavadis

On World Samosa Day, we celebrate Ahmedabad’s timeless bond with the triangular delight

Every year on September 5, food lovers mark World Samosa Day—a tribute to the crispy, golden triangle that has ruled taste buds for centuries. From roadside stalls to five-star hotels, the samosa remains a universal favorite, offering comfort and flavour in every bite.

Though now synonymous with Indian street food, the samosa’s origins lie in the Middle East, where a similar snack called sambosa was relished centuries ago. Traders brought it to India around the 13th–14th century, where it embraced local spices and fillings to become the beloved version we know today.

Endless flavours, endless love
Traditionally stuffed with spiced potatoes and peas, the vegetarian samosa has since evolved into countless variations—cheese, paneer, noodles, corn, and even chocolate. Non-vegetarian options are equally popular, with chicken, mutton, kheema, and egg fillings adding to the diversity.

Ahmedabad: A city of samosa lovers
For Amdavadis, the samosa is not just food—it’s part of everyday life. Whether during evening chai, family gatherings, or office breaks, it’s a constant companion, best enjoyed with tangy tamarind or spicy green chutney.

The city is dotted with iconic samosa joints. From Geeta, Seeta, Indore Chat, Agrawal, and Rupali Samosa to the legendary Premchand Nashtawala near Maninagar Crossing, the options are endless. Old Ahmedabad has its gems too—Navtad Pol’s flavour-packed samosas, Maharaj’s daal samosas, and Raipur Chakla’s Surti-style minis.

Innovation thrives too: Lijjat in Maninagar serves corn-cheese samosas, Barejadi pairs minis with onion rings, and Yamuna Farsan experiments with Punjabi kaju samosas. Some shops near Dariyapur Darwaja even serve them with ragda, giving a Rajasthani twist.

More than food—it’s togetherness
For many, the samosa is tied to memory and emotion. “For me, it will always be the king of Indian street food,” says Ankita Sharma from Gurukul. “Each bite carries history, nostalgia, and happiness—especially in Ahmedabad, where love for samosas never fades.”

Government officer Rakhi Jobanputra echoes this sentiment: “The beauty of the samosa lies in the way it brings people closer. Whether it’s surprise guests or a tea-time chat with friends, it always brings warmth and togetherness.”
