Prescription-only drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro sold freely despite health risks
In a worrying trend, many youngsters and middle-aged Amdavadis are turning to prescription-only weight-loss injections—such as Wegovy and Mounjaro—illegally available over the counter and on e-stores.
According to a media report, that most pharmacies were ready to sell the drugs without prescriptions, while one e-store even accepted a blank sheet instead of a doctor’s note.
Doctors warn the misuse of these powerful injections can have serious consequences. Dr. Ramesh Goyal, endocrinologist and diabetologist, cautioned that such drugs are meant only for patients with type-2 diabetes or extreme obesity when other options fail. “They cause side-effects, reduce muscle mass along with fat, and once stopped, weight often returns,” he said.
General physician Dr. Urvi Patel added that the fad is especially risky among gym-goers and youngsters chasing quick weight loss. “These injections were designed for diabetes management, not vanity slimming. Unsupervised use can damage the liver, kidneys, and heart,” she said.
Ahmedabad Medical Association president Dr. Dhiren Mehta stressed the dangers: “Even paracetamol can be harmful without proper guidance. Imagine what misuse of such strong drugs can do.”
Despite strict rules, five out of six pharmacies visited in areas including Bopal, Nehrunagar, Navrangpura, Bodakdev, and Vastrapur offered the jabs freely.
