The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) general body meeting on Saturday saw heated exchanges as the opposition accused officials of negligence, blaming poor sanitation and contaminated drinking water for hundreds of deaths in the city.According to a media report, Congress leaders claimed that 897 people have died in the past decade due to mosquito- and water-borne diseases. They also alleged that 94 citizens lost their lives in the last five years after being hit by AMTS and BRTS buses.Raising safety concerns over the Sabarmati river, the opposition pointed out that though AMC owns two rescue boats, neither is operational, and no rescue team has been deployed. This, they said, contributed to over 1,800 drowning deaths in the past 11 years.Calling the incidents “administrative failures” rather than accidents, Congress members demanded compensation for victims’ families and accountability from the ruling party.
