Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reiterated his call for promoting indigenous products, urging shopkeepers to display ‘Swadeshi Only’ boards outside their establishments during the upcoming festive season.
His remarks came just two days before the US deadline of August 27, when the Trump administration’s 50% tariffs on Indian goods are set to take effect.Speaking at an event in Ahmedabad, PM Modi appealed to citizens to buy only Indian-made products—from festival decorations to gifts—and asked traders to avoid selling imported items.
“Swadeshi and Aatma-nirbhar Bharat are the highways to a Viksit Bharat. Whatever we buy should be Made in India,” he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that small steps like prioritising local goods could significantly strengthen India’s economy and safeguard farmers, small industries, and cattle-rearers. He reminded traders to focus on improving product quality and keeping prices competitive.
Invoking Mahatma Gandhi, Modi said global politics is now driven by economic interests and asserted that India would not compromise on protecting its people’s livelihood, even if international pressure intensifies.
