The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has introduced a new rule that requires all Paying Guest (PG) operators to get No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from both their housing society and the police.
According to a media report, this rule comes after a Gujarat High Court order asking the AMC to set clear guidelines for PG accommodations. The new policy, part of the CGDCR 2017 rules, aims to improve safety and reduce problems caused by unregulated PGs, such as overcrowding and noise.
Many residential societies have welcomed the move. “We’ve faced issues with unknown people and loud noise from PGs for years,” said Bhumi Trivedi, a society chairperson in Ghodasar. “Now we will have a say. This is a fair rule.”
The guidelines now treat PGs like hostels or lodges, meaning they must follow strict rules related to fire safety, building use, and official permissions. PG owners must apply for permission within 30 days of starting, and parking space is now mandatory—20% for hostels and 30–50% for lodges.
Earlier, AMC had little control over PG operations. But with the new rules, the civic body can now take strict action, including shutting down PGs that don’t follow the guidelines.
