Air India received 9 show-cause notices for safety violations in last 6 months

A total of nine show-cause notices have been issued to Air India over the past six months for safety violations, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

In response to a query about the safety, reliability, and airworthiness of Air India flights, Mohol said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had issued the notices. He added that enforcement action has already been completed in one case.

“During the last six months, a total of nine show cause notices have been issued to Air India in connection with five identified safety violations. Enforcement action has been completed in respect of one violation,” Murlidhar Mohol said.

According to a media report, the question, posed during the ongoing Parliament Monsoon Session, also sought clarification on whether any communication had been issued by the DGCA concerning Air India’s periodical maintenance, operations, or crew conduct. The minister`s response confirmed that the notices were related to these broader aspects of flight safety and operation.

In response to a query about the cause of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, Civil Aviation Minister Murlidhar Mohol referred to the preliminary report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

Mohol stated that an investigation has been ordered by the Director General of AAIB under Rule 11 of the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents & Incidents) Rules, 2017, to determine the probable cause(s) or contributing factors behind the crash of Air India flight AI-171.

The AAIB published its preliminary report on July 12, 2025, which is available on its official website. The investigation is ongoing.

The minister also noted that, over the past six months, no adverse trends have been reported in Air India’s reliability records for the aircraft involved in the crash.

AAIB totally unbiased: Naidu

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is “totally unbiased” and is carrying out a definitive and thorough rule-based probe to find out what exactly led to the Air India plane crash that killed 260 people last month, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said in Rajya Sabha on Monday, reported the PTI.

Ten days after the AAIB came out with its initial probe into the fatal crash, Naidu said the investigation process is being carried out as per international norms and assured the Upper House that the country has a very robust aviation safety mechanism.

“We want to stand by the truth. We want to find out what exactly happened and that is only going to be coming out once the final report (of AAIB) is placed. We have to respect the process of investigation and once that process has happened, then we can talk about what happened, how it happened and then corrective measures (can be taken),” Naidu said.
