Colleges offering Bachelor of Science (BSc) under Gujarat University (GU) have recorded the lowest percentage of confirmed admissions—just 33%—in the final phase of undergraduate admissions through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS).
Out of 8,313 BSc seats across GU-affiliated colleges, only 2,789 students have confirmed their admission. In contrast, BCom and BA courses have seen far better responses, with 63% (19,405 of 30,855 seats) and 60% (10,662 of 17,659 seats) filled, respectively.
Across all six major undergraduate programs at GU, 58% of the 65,269 seats have been filled. Other programs show higher admission confirmation rates:
BBA – 66.81%
BCA – 61.84%
Integrated Courses – 61.52%
Engineering Shift Hurting BSc Admissions
According to Jatin Parikh, in-charge principal of MG Science College, the declining interest in core science courses is not new but part of a continuing trend.
“What’s worrying is the sharp fall in admissions from Group A (Mathematics) students. With the increase in engineering seats, even students scoring just 50% in Class 12 Science can secure admission in engineering. That reduces the intake for BSc programs,” he said.
Meanwhile, Group B students (Biology stream) are more inclined towards medical, paramedical, and emerging fields like biotechnology and agriculture, further contributing to the decline in BSc admissions.
GCAS Portal Causing Confusion
An official from GU’s admission committee attributed part of the problem to the GCAS portal, which handles admissions across 15 universities.
“Students often receive offers from multiple institutions. Many fail to confirm admission at a single college, don’t pay the fees, or simply don’t turn up for classes. This creates a significant gap,” the official said.
The centralized admission system, though intended to streamline the process, has instead created confusion and delays, affecting the final enrollment numbers—particularly in traditional science streams.
