Parts of Surat witnessed severe waterlogging on Sunday following hours of incessant heavy rainfall, disrupting daily life and slowing down traffic on several key roads.
The Purna River’s water level has also risen significantly due to continuous downpours in Navsari and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, Banaskantha district, especially Tharad, is facing severe flooding, with vehicles struggling to move through submerged roads.
In response to the worsening weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Surat, warning of very heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds. A red alert has also been issued for Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, Morbi, Jamnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Rajkot, Sabarkantha, and Banaskantha, forecasting:
- Rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour
- Gusty winds below 40 km/h
- Risk of lightning and localised flooding
Authorities have urged residents in these districts to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
The IMD has also issued yellow alerts for the upcoming week, warning of extremely heavy rainfall across Gujarat, particularly in Saurashtra and Kutch, where low-lying areas face a moderate flash flood risk and transportation disruptions in coastal urban areas.
The western coastal belt, including Konkan, Goa, and the Ghat regions of Maharashtra, is also on high alert due to a strong offshore trough and heavy moisture inflow from the Arabian Sea. Extremely heavy rainfall (21 cm or more) is expected on July 4, and again between July 6 and 7, particularly over South Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra.
