Two water tanks, with a combined capacity of 2,000 litres, collapsed along with a roof slab from the third floor of Birju Apartments in Ambawadi early Sunday following heavy rain. Thankfully, no one was injured as the area was unoccupied at the time.
According to a media report, the tanks—installed over 22 years ago—crashed through multiple floors of the building. Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) responded quickly, cordoned off the area, and confirmed that no one was trapped under the debris.
“The slab likely weakened due to rainfall, causing the tanks to fall,” said a senior fire officer. “We ensured the safety of the residents and started structural checks immediately.”
Initial inspection revealed serious damage to the building’s structure. As a precaution, the building has been sealed, and residents have been temporarily shifted.
A civic engineer at the site noted that Birju Apartments already showed signs of wear. Though older cement tanks were replaced with PVC ones to reduce the load, the roof slab still deteriorated over time.
The Amdavad Municipal Corporation’s Estate Department is expected to release a detailed report soon to determine whether repairs or demolition is necessary.
