After months of urging residents to separate dry and wet waste, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has adopted a stricter approach. The civic body has issued notices to chairpersons and secretaries of residential societies, warning that door-to-door waste collection will be halted if segregation is not implemented within three days.
The AMC currently collects around 900 metric tonnes of waste daily across the city. “While most commercial and institutional establishments are following segregation guidelines, residential societies remain a major concern,” said an official from the Solid Waste Management Department.
Ahmedabad has nearly 25 lakh residential units spread across seven zones. So far, over 10 lakh notices have been issued, directing societies to adopt proper waste segregation practices. “We have set up separate processing facilities for dry and wet waste, but mixed waste renders them ineffective,” the official added.
To promote segregation, AMC had earlier distributed two 10-litre bins—one for dry waste and one for wet waste—to almost every household. However, the initiative failed to bring about a lasting behavioural shift among residents.
Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani stressed the importance of public cooperation. “Effective solid waste management is critical. We’ve taken major steps to reduce the load on the Pirana dump yard. But to keep Ahmedabad clean and green, citizens must follow the rules. This time, we are determined to enforce compliance.”
