Indian Railways will change its ticket prices from July 1, 2025. Long-distance travel will become slightly more expensive, depending on the class and distance. However, fares for short-distance and suburban routes will stay the same.
Train travel in India is set to get a little costlier, but only for some passengers. Indian Railways has announced new ticket prices starting July 1, 2025. The fare increase will not affect everyone—passengers on suburban trains and those using monthly season tickets will see no change in their fares.
The new tariff will impact ordinary second class (for distances over 500 km), Mail/Express non-AC coaches, and all AC classes.
Here’s what’s changing in train fares from July 1, 2025:
Ordinary Second Class: No Hike for Short Distances
If you travel in second class and your trip is up to 500 km, your fare will stay the same. There’s no increase in this range.
For trips longer than 500 km, there will be a small hike of half a paise per km. So, for a 1,000 km journey, you’ll pay just Rs 2.50 more.
Mail/Express (Non-AC): Small Increase
Passengers travelling in non-AC Mail or Express trains will see a fare hike of 1 paise per km. For instance, a 1,000 km journey will now cost Rs 10 more than before.
Train Fare Changes from July 1, 2025: Here’s What You Need to Know
Small Hike, Noticeable for Long-Distance Travellers
While the increase is minimal, regular long-distance passengers are likely to feel the difference over time.
AC Coaches: Fare Up by 2 Paise per Km
All AC classes—AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier, and First Class AC—will see a hike of 2 paise per kilometre.
For example, a 1,000 km journey will now cost Rs 20 more.
What Stays the Same
No Increase in Suburban Train Fares
Daily commuters using suburban trains (like Mumbai locals or Kolkata suburban services) will see no change in fares. These routes remain unaffected.
No Hike in Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs)
Fares for MSTs, used by office-goers and students, remain unchanged. This is a major relief for lakhs of daily travellers.
Why the Hike?
Though the fare adjustments are small, they could make a difference for frequent or long-distance travellers. Indian Railways hasn’t revised fares in a while, and this move seems aimed at balancing rising operational costs without putting pressure on regular commuters.
Effective Date
The revised fares will apply to tickets booked for travel on or after July 1, 2025. Passengers are advised to check the updated fare while booking.
